Step-by-Step Instructions

Choose Your Container

Select an opaque plastic bin 10-20 gallons with a lid. Darker colors keep light out and worms comfortable.

  • Avoid clear bins - worms prefer darkness
  • Ensure lid fits snugly
  • Smooth interior walls prevent escapes

Drill Ventilation Holes

Drill 1/8" holes around the top sides for airflow, 2-3 inches apart.

  • 20-30 holes total for proper ventilation
  • Keep holes near the top to prevent moisture loss
  • Cover inside with mesh if needed

Create Drainage System

Drill 1/4" holes in the bottom for drainage, spaced 3-4 inches apart.

  • 8-12 drainage holes is sufficient
  • Place bin on bricks over a tray to catch liquid
  • Optional: line bottom with mesh to prevent escapes

Prepare Bedding

Fill bin 1/3 full with moistened shredded newspaper, cardboard, or coconut coir.

  • Bedding should be damp like a wrung-out sponge
  • Mix different materials for best results
  • Add a handful of garden soil for grit

Add Worms

Introduce red wigglers to their new home and let them acclimate for a day.

  • Start with 1 pound of worms per square foot
  • Place worms on top of bedding
  • Wait 24 hours before first feeding

Begin Feeding

Bury small amounts of food scraps in different spots, rotating locations.

  • Start with small portions until population grows
  • Cover food with bedding
  • Monitor moisture and add bedding as needed

Moisture Management
  • •Too wet? Add dry bedding and more ventilation holes

Temperature Control
