Harvesting Worm Castings

Learn when and how to harvest your nutrient-rich vermicompost while keeping your worms healthy

Harvest at the Right Time
  • •Wait 3-6 months from bin start
  • •Look for dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling material
  • •Most food scraps should be unrecognizable
  • •Harvest when bin is 3/4 full
Preserve Worm Population
  • •Always leave 25-30% of material in bin as starter
  • •Return any cocoons and baby worms you find
  • •Avoid harvesting in extreme temperatures
  • •Keep some finished castings for beneficial microbes
Signs It's Ready
  • •Material looks like coffee grounds
  • •Original bedding is no longer visible
  • •Sweet, earthy smell (not rotten)
  • •Few recognizable food scraps remain
What to Avoid
  • •Don't harvest all material at once
  • •Avoid exposing worms to direct sunlight too long
  • •Don't use castings with unprocessed food
  • •Never completely empty the bin

Harvest Methods

Side-to-Side Migration

Push finished compost to one side and add fresh bedding and food to the other side. Worms will migrate, leaving castings ready to harvest.

Easy
2-3 weeks

Steps:

  1. 1.Push all contents to one side of the bin
  2. 2.Add fresh bedding and food to empty side
  3. 3.Wait 2-3 weeks for worms to migrate
  4. 4.Harvest the abandoned side
Light Method

Dump contents onto a tarp under bright light. Worms burrow down, allowing you to scrape away castings layer by layer.

Easy
30-60 minutes

Steps:

  1. 1.Dump bin contents onto tarp in bright light
  2. 2.Form into cone-shaped piles
  3. 3.Wait 10 minutes for worms to burrow down
  4. 4.Scrape top layer of castings
  5. 5.Repeat until only worms remain
Screen Sifting

Use 1/4" or 1/2" hardware cloth to sift castings from worms and uncomposted material.

Medium
1-2 hours

Steps:

  1. 1.Build or buy a mesh screen (1/4" or 1/2")
  2. 2.Sift small amounts at a time
  3. 3.Castings fall through, worms and debris stay on top
  4. 4.Return worms and large particles to bin
Stacked Tray System

Add new trays on top. Worms migrate upward to fresh food, leaving finished castings in bottom trays.

Easy
Continuous

Steps:

  1. 1.When top tray is full, add new tray above
  2. 2.Add bedding and food to new tray
  3. 3.Worms migrate upward over 2-3 months
  4. 4.Harvest bottom tray when worms have left
Using Your Worm Castings

As Soil Amendment

Mix 1 part castings to 4 parts soil for potting mix or garden beds

As Top Dressing

Sprinkle 1/4" layer around plants and water in

As Compost Tea

Steep 1 cup castings in 1 gallon water for 24 hours, then dilute 1:10
